How do you know if your writing is good? When writing for an audience, it’s hard to know what they want. You might have an idea of what they like or dislike, but this isn’t always enough because it’s very subjective.
After authoring ten books and hundreds of blogs, publishing more than 50 Amazon bestselling collaborative books with over 500 authors, and building an empire focused on writing, one thing I know for sure is that good writing takes practice, patience, and a willingness to learn new skills.
Let’s talk more about it
Writing can be a challenging task, and you may encounter a few problems as you write. Your work might not get approved or selected, or it might not resonate with your audience. Don’t give up! Just because you face these difficulties doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t write. It just means that your writing style might need some work. One way to develop your writing style is to work on improving it by honing your skills and knowledge of writing.
The art of knowing what your audience wants and delivering it in a manner where they correspond and relate to it is called Writing Style and if you make this right, then things start falling into place.
At Brave Healer, we make it easier for people to become published authors, as well as help them improve their writing style. You can also download our FREE Ebook for tips and tricks on improving your writing.
8-Steps you must take for Improving your Writing Style
1. Read, Read, and Read
We cannot emphasize this enough; you have got to read. Pick up any book and start reading, read an ebook, a comic book, or even non-fiction but remember the goal is to gain knowledge and to discover other writers’ writing styles.
Read everything – from fiction to non-fiction, from academic research papers to newspaper articles. Reading is an essential part of getting better at writing because it helps you to understand the nuances of language and it also helps you develop your own voice as a writer.
You can even pick up one of the writers from Brave Healer Productions and read about their transformative journeys. It might not only help you build ideas but will also make you notice how contemporaries like you prosper.
2. Observe and make use of the 5 senses
See things around you; is there something peculiar? Is something worth noting down? Write down things in routine and then write about those same things differently. Take the example of a flower, write about it, what does it look like (what should the readers imagine), how it smells (what’s its fragrance like), and how much time did it take to blossom? Are there characteristics of flowers that you can connect somewhere else?
Make that connection, link things and there you are ready with a story to be told to the world.
3. Type it Out
Most of the improvements when it comes to a profession like this are only being made in the head. Put those thoughts into action; our statistics say that around 70% of people don’t even sit down to write and are only thinking about it in their heads. If you want to improve your writing, then you need to practice it every day. The more often you write, the better your writing will become over time. Even if you only have 5 minutes or so in which to write each day, that’s still better than nothing at all!
4. Change the Perspective
Get out of your comfort zone, experiment, and try different things: angles, perspectives, and genres. Start that chapter with a first-person perspective, then, in the second chapter – showcase the other characters’ way of seeing the situation, then, in the third chapter, introduce the narrator. Continue doing this throughout the book and see what sort of results you get.
5. Detailing is Everything
It won’t be wrong to say that Sherlock Holmes is the best of all detectives only because of this not-so-trivial matter. Well, details. It’s said that even the most ordinary things can become extraordinary if the detailing is done properly.
An excellent tip here that our book writing coach gave us is to include sensory details; tell your audience what it smells like where your character is. What sounds can they hear in that particular location, how far off are they able to see, and what’s left outside their vicinity. This helps your readers feel more connected to the character to the extent that they might be in the same boat.
6. Keep a journal of ideas
The curation of ideas from their birth to their execution can be a daunting process. A journal can come in handy whenever you want and for whichever idea you come up with. This journal can be either a handwritten notebook or a notes app on your phone, it can be anything as long as you’re writing down your ideas and keeping a track of them.
The best ideas can come to you even in your sleep, so keep a bedside journal as well.
7. Never Say No to Learning
Be it any profession, to experience any form of growth, there has to be a constant source of learning. You must learn, be willing to learn, unlearn, re-write, and re-edit, that is how you grow as a writer. To do this, you can seek out programs and enroll in classes, or even better you can even join our Writers Circle which is a community for holistic healers, coaches, and professionals who want the support, community, and accountability of a writing group! The goal of this writing circle is to help you improve and stay on track with your writing practice, and provide a schedule and community for support, growth, encouragement, inspiration, and honest feedback.
8. Erase, Rephrase, Re-write, Edit, Re-Edit
There is no turning back from this point. If you have made it here, then that means you must make this a practice, and reread the things you have written. Get rid of the fluff, and re-write. Although this job is done by a professional editor, you can improve your writing by doing some editing on your own.
Read thoroughly what you have written, do a spell and grammar check, rephrase a few things which seem improper, and then go ahead with the submission.
