Writers! It’s 2024, and you’re ready to take your writing up a notch! It’s time to join a writing community that gives you a super boost and helps you reach your writing goals this year!
What is a writing community?
These days, it can be an in-person or online community of people getting together with a common goal to write. Specific writing communities might have specific goals depending on what kind of writing their writers are doing. And some might help you stay accountable to writing, period!
Accountability is only one good reason to join a writing community. If you’re like me, you also love being inspired by writing prompts, chatting about all things writing with other like-minded souls, and dedicating time to getting some writing done.
One of the biggest reasons I love the online writing community I’m in (The Brave Healer Writer’s Circle) is that I get to focus on this craft I love with other people who love it as much as me and who spark ideas, inspiration, and techniques I haven’t thought of. Meeting regularly changes my writing. Meeting regularly also helps me get to know my fellow writers and serves as a wonderful way to network for my business, too.
Why join a writing community?
You might agree with some of the whys listed above, but ultimately, you join because you have writing goals this year and need the inspiration and motivation to work on them consistently. I also enjoy our writing community because writing is a healing process. When I commit to showing up to write, especially with others as my witness, my writing moves to a new level, and the impact of it transforms me. This awareness can happen in a one-hour writing session or even a 5-minute writing prompt. Whether I’m practicing in our online writing community on Zoom or writing with friends at the dining room table, the energy is powered up, and so is my writing.
The Writer’s Circle online writing community often surprises me. I might have been in a bad mood that day or had something happen that had my energy tanking, but as soon as I see the faces on the screen, the smile comes, and I’m ready to learn, share, and play. That one reason alone incentivizes me to show up over and over again.
Here are 7 to consider before joining a writing community:
- Be clear on your writing goals, even if it’s to start a regular journaling practice. Knowing what you want means you can set goals moving forward and see your progress.
- What kind of writing is the community doing? Find out what people are working on, and you’ll have life-long writing partners moving forward.
- Find out when the writing community meets and if that fits your schedule. The schedule must fit, or you won’t show up.
- Connect with members outside of the community. This takes everything you’re doing for your writing up a notch and helps you meet your goals for sharing and networking.
- Understand your strengths, weaknesses, and what you want to learn. Stay open and curious and recognize the process as a healing journey. This is so much more than just writing!
- Not every community is a great fit. Most have a way to join for free to try it out! Try the environment, test the energy, and ensure it’s a great fit.
- Know who is teaching and what they’ve been working on. A great writing community understands that there is a village of teachers and opportunities for learning and shares generously.
When you explore the different writing communities out there, it’s great to connect, network, and even interview the leaders. Most legitimate communities will welcome your inquiries and be happy to connect and chat to make sure the community is right for you. They will also offer other ways to take your writing to the next level, like resources for proofing, editing, publishing, and retreats!
Our writer’s retreats for 2024 are part of how we serve our writing community. We also regularly connect with proofreading, editing, and other writing, blogging, copywriting, and book experts to make sure you know what’s out there and what’s possible when it comes to sharing your brave words with the world.

Writing changed my life. Joining a writing community was the inspiration I needed to take it to the next level. Showing up and writing, even when I don’t feel like it, is how my writing transformed into something that changed others’ lives and built my business. Today, I leave my legacy in every brave word I share, and I know I’ve lived my purpose. That’s a pretty amazing thing to say. All because of writing. . .
