Collaboration in business—are you leveraging it?
What’s the fastest way to double your revenue? Collaboration, not competition.
But if you’re like me and feel like everyone is saying, “Collaboration not competition,” but not everyone is actually collaborating, how about we talk about what it means and how to take it to the next level of awesomeness?
Because collaboration turns strangers into million-dollar allies. Seriously, when you really embrace collaboration and all it can mean, you’ll start to get very clear about creating some collaboration goals for 2025 and beyond.
I love the idea of celebrating how diverse perspectives drive breakthrough ideas and unmatched success.
“There’s no one guru for a topic.” I was talking about collaboration with a group of authors, and we agreed that if you think you’re the only one, you have a problem.
“When you bring everyone’s unique voices, stories, and tools together, you have an incredibly powerful world-changing collaboration that helps people well beyond what was possible with only one voice.”
“Yes, exactly,” replied Samantha.
We smiled at the idea, and then the next question came. A question most business owners can’t move past, so they stay stuck being the “one voice” of their profession and struggle to create meaningful collaborations.
“But they do what I do. How can I collaborate with someone when they do the exact same thing? Isn’t it better to just go at it alone?”
Okay, that’s two questions, but you get it, right? You’ve wondered this exact same thing, I’m sure of it. We all think about how awesome collaboration is until we meet someone who does the exact same thing as us. Then the excitement grinds to a halt, and we’re not sure what to do.
I remember talking to a successful publisher who interviewed celebrities on the red carpet. “I got to interview John Travolta,” she said.
How can I get in on that kind of action? I wondered with a small amount of jealousy.
We were talking about the offers we added to the Oscar gift bags one year, and she shared her experience with me.
“You really have to offer something valuable. When you do, they’ll take you up on it.”
That conversation and her willingness to share openly about her strategy was collaborative energy. It was “collaboration over competition” energy. It was “I want everyone to win” kind of energy.
Do you want everyone to win? Even your direct competition?
I had to do a gut check on that due to my ego’s quick envy response. It’s how we’re wired and conditioned to react.
Get your awareness game on point and change the envy and jealousy to celebration energy (yes, for them) and watch what happens for you. I walked my walk in that moment and grounded into excitement and celebration with a deep, pelvic bowl breath while she talked.
“Wowee, that’s awesome! I’d love to do that some day! I love John Travolta!”
I was genuinely excited like it was happening to me. I envisioned it even. It’s a badass practice when you’re speaking to people who are in a place you hope to go, doing what you’re doing, and succeeding at the next level.
I’m excited to talk to all kinds of people, both non-competitive business professionals who serve the same audience I do (badass collaboration potential there) and people who do similar or the same thing as I do. I realized that great minds think alike in terms of visionary mindset and indomitable spirit, but they don’t always think alike in terms of inspired or creative ideas. That’s one great reason to make sure you get your collaboration hat on in new ways.
I’ve enjoyed playing in the sandbox with many different collaborative visionaries this past year. A shout out to the visionary alien minds of Justin Breen and his Epic Fit Network, Brandon Fong and Curiosity Island, Randy Molland and his Impact Circle, and Simon Severino and the 200K Club. All of these guys understand collaboration the way I know is possible. Being around different thinkers helped me expand my mind, ideas, strategies, and horizons this year. I’m so grateful.
