Literally and figuratively – we must surround ourselves with the vibrations we desire. The sounds we admire, the love that inspires. It’s our choice to find the music in our lives, to decide to flip the switch to on, and spin the volume dial up. It’s our duty to go for the music. It’s the reason we’re here.
I started listening to music again and realize now why I may have gone years without it. It forces us to feel. The sound, vibrations, words, rhythm, beat and tones all resonate, or not…creating feeling inside of us. Songs make us want to dance, or cry. They make us want to scream, shout or sleep. They relax us and spin us up.
When I stopped listening to music I was an overwhelmed, super-multitasking mom of two, working full time and attempting to breathe in between navigating the beltway and changing diapers. Music tipped me over the edge. It was like my brain didn’t have room for one more tiny stimulation. I needed more silence and I needed it bad.
I’d grown up banging my head to Van Halen on a regular basis. Music could not be too often or loud enough. As soon as I was old enough I went to clubs to listen and dance. I also taught aerobics, and frequently mixed my own cassettes for classes. I loved all kinds of music from New Age to Rock, and had a huge collection of tapes.
I never realized when I turned off the music; too stressed and busy to give it a thought. I didn’t even know what I was missing at the time, that connection to life and soul that could have probably kept me feeling more alive. I never turned it on. My car radio went silent for years. The stereo collected dust.
This past year I turned the music back on. A friend who makes it and is rarely seen without some accompanying track, sparked something in me and now I can’t turn it off. It’s helped me move through a tough time, encouraging me to feel but also giving me different sorts of ways to feel when the kind I’m feeling doesn’t feel good.
I wonder now why I ever turned it off. How I lost connection with such a powerful healing tool. So today I choose to turn on the music. When I’m happy. When I’m sad. Whenever. I’ve reconnected to my soul and music helps me amp up my vibration to badass levels…so I can share that with you!
