Shake Your Doubt and Keep Moving

What if your mom and your BFF were the only ones who ever read your stuff? It’s what you’re thinking about your new blog, or your new Facebook page posts, or your shiny new newsletters, right?

That’s your inner critic talking. And for sure, it was mine this week when I managed to make it through my first webinar.

Video was rolling, I had practiced the tech pieces, run through my schpeel, run my very first Facebook ad for the event, and actually had over 100 sign-ups, and still I figured that my mom and BFF would be the only ones listening.

When I realized there were a few more people than my trusted two online, including some from out of state and out of the country, that voice was still really loud. How did I sound? Was I speaking to slowly? Do they see the problems I’m having with these stupid, fucking slides?

I realized I’ll never shut that voice up. It won’t matter if I end up on the stage with Oprah one day…I will still wonder if my mom is the only one watching and if people will like what I have to say. I’ll be worried about being perfect and that voice will confirm that I’m not.

So what’s a girl to do when she realizes that fear and doubt, and their accompanying voices will probably always be along for the ride? Keep writing. Keep moving. Keep dreaming. And keep sharing.

I’m writing this blog today and that’s a start. The action of telling you the story of what’s on my mind eases the pressure in my heart. The movement of my fingers on the keyboard sends a message to my soul; “You are cool, woman, keep going. You love this. Nothing is going to stop you.”

That makes me smile.

What’s a woman to do when she knows what she’s born for, but the voices keep after that part of her that wonders if it’s all a joke? Keep moving. Keep going within for the real answers. Keep getting more still, and feeling the middle of that space for direction.

I watched my own webinar yesterday after I came down from the adrenaline rush. I picked out all the parts I didn’t like; all the parts that could have been better, smoother, more animated, more me. I easily tore myself apart. But in the end I came around to the fact that I did okay. I was proud of my first attempt.

What’s a warrior to do when she understands that every new thing will be this same battle. That moving through the fear is not a one time deal and just because she has a small victory doesn’t mean she’s done. She keeps moving. She just keeps going. It’s nothing new. It’s nothing special. But the power lies in that determination and perseverance.

I’ll do some more webinars now that I’ve had one under my belt. I’ll make them better, more specific, more me. You’ll see me improve. You’ll see and hear my message get clearer and my ability to deliver it become stronger. The only reason you’ll see all that is because I’ll be doing it, whether I’m really ready or not. I’ll be moving through my fear and acting on my dream – even with the fear.

Sooner or later, you’ll see me on stage, telling my story, doing my best to inspire you to tell yours. Because that’s what I was born for. I was born to be brave, shake off the doubt and keep moving; to make my light shine bright enough that you see yours reflected in me.

If you think I’m shining bright then what you see is your own brilliant flame. Look inside. Feel to the core. And please, start telling your stories.

Tell me in the comments – what’s one story you’d like to start to tell out loud?
