Show Up And Kick Ass

So, today I decided that I can kick ass AND write poetry.  For a while now I have been attempting to find the place where the two could meet and over the last few weeks I found it, somewhere inside, by jumping through my wall of fire, talking to the dragon, and sharing some of my stuff with you all.  So here is a poem, about being a martial artist, and a kind of spirit warrior, if you will.  She’s been inside all along, too afraid to come out.  I am realizing that when she comes out she connects with others and this in itself is healing.  The gifts were waiting just behind the wall of fire.   So for all those who read, I thank you.  I am very, very grateful to those who, even when mowed over by my “enthusiasm”  just say, “Bring it on!”  Love you guys!

Show Up And Kick Ass

I stand tall in this uniform

no matter what color my belt may be

I belong

to this tribe, they have my back

I can see.

My spirit soars in this dojang

no matter what mood I brought

I belong

to this tribe, they fill me up

every thought.

My body shines in these moves

no matter what condition it holds

I belong

to this tribe, they challenge me

to be bold.

My mind searches inside

from chaos to space

I belong

to this tribe, it is practice

not a race.

I learn skills in this school

you’ve been there before

I belong

to this tribe,  patience

opens the door

My passion ignites in this Do

it really is all good

I belong

to this tribe, that’s

well understood.

It starts in my mind

and ends here in class

I belong

to this tribe, I must

show up and kick ass.

The ass that I kick

is my own

most the time.

When will I learn

to move away,

step aside.

The real goal now

is to conquer

my life

take the lessons from here

bring them home, and survive.

I stand tall here at home,

and it feels easier

to deal

somehow these issues have

a much different feel.

I am brave, I am strong

I know I can be,

I belong

to this tribe, they have my back

I am free.

It starts in my mind

I don’t get a “pass.”

I belong

to this tribe, I will show up

and kick ass.

How wonderful. Through Taekwondo you are learning your inner strength and applying it to all aspects of your life. Isn’t it funny? You’d never think that Taekwondo would awaken the poet in you? Beautiful poem, and I’ve seen you kick ass! I’d say you’re on your way! What’s next?

Your proud mom.
