What to Write When Everything’s Already Been Written

Give Your Wild Heart a VoiceI thought I’d be sneaky and do a piece comparing the health benefits of kale vs. spinach. I found the nutrition data online and was ready to do a great piece that one of the health and fitness editors would love. Everyone eats kale, I thought, but we were all brought up on spinach. I thought this article idea was brilliant. Until I found the exact article online already.

A feeling of defeat came over me as I stared dejectedly at my computer and X’ed out of the screen. Crap, I thought, I’ll never write anything unique, or interesting. Everything’s been written already.

By the way…kale, definitely kale.

I want to write. I want to write about stuff you’ll read. I want to have great ideas. I want to have THE idea of the century…the million dollar idea, the best seller.

And so does everyone else on the planet it seems.

There is so much information out there now it boggles the mind. What’s a passionate writer to do when it seems like everything has already been written?

She remembers her unique voice…and what she really wants.

“There has never been and never will be another version of you. It doesn’t matter what’s already being created, what’s already being sold, what’s already being done, what’s already being taught, there’s one BIG thing missing from the marketplace. YOU!”
Torrie Pattillo

Do I really want to write about kale? No.

I want to write to light a fire under your ass to wake up, be brave, heal your shit and do what you love.

I want to inspire you to eat kale because it helps you achieve your deepest desires. Now there’s an article… How Eating Kale Helps You Live Your Dreams. Hmm…

You know I’m kidding. Sort of. Because it’s about conscious choices. It’s about what you do, including what you eat. It’s all about awareness.

So what do you write about when it seems like everything’s already been written? Whatever you love to do so much that you lose track of time.

You might be tired of hearing me talk about this, but I have a feeling you need to hear it again.

All of my warriors out there…find your voice, let’s hear it, be out loud, be brave.

Write about your dreams. Write about how you are living them. Write about how you are figuring out how to live them. Write about the secrets. Write about how you feel about knowing the secrets and not telling them. Write until there’s nothing left of what’s clogging your flow.

And then watch the magic happen.

Don’t be afraid of not having anything to write about. Writer’s block? Ha! Look it in the face and say, “Not today.”

Connect with that part of you that LOVES, and start writing. Open up your wild heart and give her a voice.

It’s unique because it’s your voice. Nobody will write it like you. Be afraid and write it anyway. Go ahead and let it be crap. But write.

The little golden nuggets will come because you clear out the rest. The only way to write the nugget is to pan out all the dirt. It takes time. And patience.

The prize sits in the middle of persistence. Persistent action. Not thinking.

So go and write your heart out. Wear it on your sleeve and wipe that on the page. Connect with that thing inside, that feeling, that ache…and go from there.

Turn us on with your words.
